Joomla Webhosting, presented by Brad Baker.
What to look for when selecting a host: - PHP5
- MySQL 5
- Runs su exec, if on a shared server. Su exec protects you from other users' sites on the server if those sites become compromised because php runs as a different user on each site. It's not necessary on a dedicated server and you will have better performance without it.
Protecting your site: - "There's no substitute for strong passwords and secure hosting."
- Password protect the administrator folder
- Keep Joomla updated
- Use a strong password
- Register_globals OFF on the server! This will protect you from being hacked through other sites who are sharing the same server.
When do you need to move your site from a shared server to a dedicated server? - Traffic greater than 30GB/mo. will impact the server.
- "Fancy" SEF extensions and commenting components are heavy users of resources on the server.
Brad Baker has been involved with Joomla since the start. He lives in Australia and is originally from South Africa. Brad works for Rochen, the webhosting provider for Joomla.org. Joomla uses seven servers, which receives 20 million page views per month. Brad is in charge of Sites & Infrastructure.
